THE WITCHES of EASTWICK

NODA Review - Margery Carmichael

This is the fifth new show I've seen this year, and it was great! Phil Snow made a wonderful job of Darryl especially with the mens chorus in "Dance". The three witches were superb[Jill Hughes, Sarah Masters and Sarah Guest]; Felicia[Angela Daniels] was also very good in a difficult part. Emily Owens played the little girl well; nice to see the white terrier again. The only criticism was that sometimes the orchestra was too loud: we couldn't hear the chorus's words- quite important in a new show when the audience doesn't know the story. Still, a fantastic show.

Review

This is the show that makes the black arts a bundle of fun.

When there's a stranger in town and there are three desperate housewives in the offing, somethings got to give.

The result is a somewhat saucy story, with Phil Snow scoring heavily as the clearly irresistible Darryl Van Horne in a performance of charm, humour and naughty confidence.

The women caught in the aura are Alex [Jill Hughes], the daffy Sukie [Sarah Guest] and Jane [Sarah Masters], whose voices blend beguilingly in the four numbersthey sing together and who all have a good eye for their comedic opportunities.

Mike Lane {Clyde] and Angela Daniels {Felicia], who leads the Dirty Laundry number, reinforce the fun and Charlotte Daniels {Jennifer] and Phil Holloway [Michael] provide the young love interest. All praise to a chorus that grabs its opportunities, with Dance with the Devil particularly eye-catching.

And there's a delightful little dog called Beth who has even got her picture in the show's attractive programme.

Peter Walker's pleasing production runs until Saturday
